Clinique La Prairie and the future of medical technologies

Innovation & Research

by Simone Gibertoni – Clinique La Prairie CEO

The Coronavirus pandemic has made it clear how technology is, and will increasingly be, key to the future of global healthcare. There have been numerous examples: the management of the pandemic in Asia, which was completely technology-driven using innovations such as thermal cameras, face recognition and complex predictive models; Artificial Intelligence (AI) models that predict the virus’s spread; and the enormous growth in health apps, most extensively in the East but also in the USA and Europe.

Many innovations have come from small and flexible companies

Clinique La Prairie and the future of medical technologies

The health and wellbeing sector is continuously being revolutionized by technological advances in genomics, AI and robotics. For example, we will see a growth in the use of AI in emerging economies for remote medical diagnosis, improving the quality of care and lowering costs. Advances in AI ‘imaging’ are another striking example of the developments happening in medical technology. Although the field of ‘health and wellbeing’ immediately interested the huge technological players such as Google, Apple and Microsoft, the challenges these giants have faced often turned out to be much more complex than they imagined: privacy problems, a lack of user trust and an inability to consider the importance of the ‘human’ aspect, for example. Conversely, many innovations have come from small and flexible companies, often start-ups.

Hyper-personalized approach to preventive medicine

Clinique La Prairie and the future of medical technologies

At Clinique La Prairie we remain convinced that a human and hyper-personalized approach to preventive medicine is the key to offering services that are truly capable of helping people to live better and longer lives. AI and machine learning already provide fundamental support for our doctors and for effective benchmarking (in Clinique La Prairie we have been pioneers of projects related to AI in imaging) and this will expand. However, prevention based on four pillars (medical, nutrition, wellbeing and exercise) will remain the key to our programs. The DNA of Clinique La Prairie is to always be at the ‘cutting edge’ of innovation. This has been the case throughout our for 90-year history. This is why our holistic approach already sees us applying the latest technologies and means we will continue to stay on top of future innovation. This is particularly so in the fields of genetics, epigenetics, nutrigenomics and stem cells.

DNA, Genetics & Epigenetics

genetics clinique la prairie

To expand a little, genetics is the study of genes and genetic variation - specifically, in our case, related to hereditary risk for age-affecting factors like disease and our immune systems. With our lab partner Gene Predictis we’ve added arguably the most sophisticated genetic tests on Earth to our programs. Our clients’ are tested and the findings used to tailor bespoke treatments accordingly. Epigenetics, on the other hand, looks at how external influences affect our gene expression (the gene expression being how the instructions in our DNA are translated into a practical product). Things like physical activity and our stress levels, for example, are powerful influences on our gene expression and, therefore, our health. Nutrigenomics, as the name suggests, specifically looks at how one of these external factors - diet - affects the gene expression and the consequences for human health. Our holistic approach means that nutrition and nutraceuticals are key to our work and play a major role in all of our programs.

Stem Cells and cellular regeneration

technology clinique la prairie

Our interest into cellular science and stem cell technologies is also expanding. Stem cells are moving steadily towards the forefront of medical science, including in the field of cellular regeneration. Clinique La Prairie is leading the way in this field. In 2019, we introduced a program that promotes anti-ageing by using the client’s own stem cells to replace degenerating cells and reduce the visible signs of ageing. We are witnessing and using technologies that will lead to a real revolution in the future. Along with the areas I have just mentioned, we will also see AI and machine learning become common in testing the effectiveness of drugs and other new technologies.

Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)

clinique la prairie follow up

Finally, the development of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), where all the vital data of our patients can be constantly monitored by our doctors, will be at the center of our research. This will ensure continuous follow-up care for the customers who come to Clinique La Prairie from over 80 different countries every year. We are constantly thinking about how to further use technology to stay connected with our clients and offer high-quality engagement throughout their health journey. The important point here - for us - is not to do it for the sake of using trendy feel-better tools, but to have a real, genuine purpose that will amplify health and wellbeing benefits for our guests, while keeping the highest level of human connection. We will use technology with a high level of customization, for example, to enhance the follow-up service after they have attended a program at the clinic or to give them access to an unprecedented level of health coaching.

Our mission is to deliver real transformation of their lifestyles. Engaging with our holistic experts at the clinic is the essential part of this profound and long-term change, while tech is one of the enablers – and no doubt a very powerful one. As innovation is rapidly moving and scientists are researching how AI can impact many areas of health, including diagnosis, it is going to be an amazing resource for supplemental care.

Overall, the focus on innovation has not let us lose sight of two essential aspects: the importance of the ‘high touch’ and the fact that serious focus on wellbeing and prevention is key to good health and longevity. Every Clinique La Prairie client will always have access to the most efficient programs for tackling today’s wellness challenges and to professionals capable of listening carefully to their needs in order to collaboratively find the best solutions for a better life.

 CLP x LLAMA

Mineral deficiencies can have a crippling impact on our everyday health and vitality, as well long term implications for healthspan. The food we eat and the environments we live in, play a critical role in maintaining a delicate balance of chemicals that sustain life. But even the most ideal-sounding diet can fall short of providing an essential mix of minerals. Barton Scott discovered the hard way, through ill health, that he suffered from chronic deficiencies that were severely impacting his quality of life. Myriad dietary interventions failed to resolve his issues and prompted Barton to apply his knowledge, as a chemical engineer and nutritionist, to resolving the problem. The solution, he discovered, revolved around the body's ability to absorb mineral particles. It led to him creating Upgraded Formulas, a US company that applies nanotechnology to minerals and assesses which components we need through a hair test. In this podcast interview with Peter Bowes, Barton explains the background to his company and why he believes that regular testing for heavy metal toxicity and mineral deficiencies is essential to support a healthier, happier, more productive life.

Episode 15 - Clinique La Prairie x LLAMA - The beauty of aging

Podcast

Aging with finesse sounds infinitely more desirable than the humdrum process of simply getting older. The language we use in describing the aging process is all important. Perhaps even more important is having a plan, as we age. Even though we "don't feel that old" there is an inevitability about the passing years - despite the latest science-backed interventions that may help us slow down the process.

Clinical psychologist, Dr. Mary Flett, has spent much of her career analyzing the way we value ourselves as we grow older, how we connect with others as we age, and the skills we need to navigate the process with grace. There are, she says, five "pillars of aging," which include creating a legacy of values, staying engaged, adaptation, spirituality, and emotional economics.

In this LLAMA podcast interview Dr. Flett, who is based in Sonoma, California, discusses the complex, nuanced journey that is aging, and challenges media-driven notions about human longevity.

Episode 24 - Clinique La Prairie x LLAMA - Why "toxic ageism" is harming everyone by Priscilla Long

Podcast

How often have you heard an older person refer to themselves as being so many "years young?" What about those who blame a "senior moment" for the occasional memory lapse?  These are examples of what the writer Priscilla Long describes as "toxic ageism." Oftentimes, she argues, ageist attitudes are perpetuated by the very people who're thriving in old age, but for some reason, view being old as a state of mind or body to be disavowed. Priscilla is a prolific and award-winning author of science, poetry and creative nonfiction. At the age of 79, her latest work, Dancing with the Muse in Old Age, focuses on what she calls "creative engagement" and "purposeful lifestyle traits" as a road map for the aging process.  In this LLAMA podcast interview with Peter Bowes, the Seattle-based author argues that ageism "poisons creativity" and explains why society should stop thinking of older people as "decrepit".

The science of longevity

longevity clinique la prairie

The scientific community has never been closer to discovering the fountain of youth; we’re approaching the dawn of a spectacular leap in longevity. Life expectancy has tripled in the last 250 years. Will we soon find the holy grail of immortality? It’s one of humanity’s oldest myths. From Gilgamesh to Dorian Gray, revisiting Faust’s pact; from Hercules to Peter Pan and Benjamin Button, the quest for immortality and eternal youth has been an ongoing theme portrayed by literature and film through the years. It wasn’t, however, until the end of the 20th century that medical research became interested in this issue. How might we live better and healthier in spite of the aging process? How might we succeed in slowing down, or even stopping, our biological clocks from ticking?

In biology, cellular senescence is a physiological process that results in slow degradation of the cell functions that cause our organisms to age. Biomedical firms and medical institutes are therefore looking for ways to halt the aging process, or at least slow it down considerably. Science now holds the promise of acting on nanoparticles, repairing DNA, regenerating cells and manufacturing tissues and organs from stem cells. Some researchers dream of increasing our cognitive abilities by interfacing our cells and neurons with computer components… What was once science-fiction has now almost become reality with, for example, regenerative medicine or autologous stem cells being reinjected for the purposes of aesthetic medicine.

longevity clp

For a long time, examining living things proved incredibly complex. Tissues, organs and cells were extremely delicate to analyse and manipulate. Understanding our biological functions seemed an insurmountable task. But the technological situation has revolutionized medical research. A few years ago, genome sequencing cost 3 billion; it’s now become more affordable, allowing for greater personalization in the healing process. We’re not, indeed, born equal in this respect, and one person’s ideal treatment could be ineffective for somebody else. Personalized genetic mapping is thus one of the pillars of this science of longevity. It doesn’t define our chronological age but, rather, our biological age, acting as a consequence of causes and facilitating preventive medicine.

Life expectancy has tripled in the last 250 years. Will we soon find the holy grail of immortality ?

longevity clp

Going beyond preventive medicine, probiotics and dietary supplements, what else can be done to slow the march of time? The good news is that there’s a lot we can do! Studies on «real» twins suggest that genes are 25% responsible for a healthy lifespan, with environmental interactions determining the remaining 75%. Other studies demonstrate that genetics account for between 30 and 70% of longevity, according to the individual in question. This proportion varies from person to person, since the relationships between our genes and environment are complex. What’s clear, however, is that changing our lifestyles could not only lengthen our lives but also allow us to enjoy them to the full, with all our energy. We’re talking, of course, about good eating habits and regular physical exercise. As well as fostering our own wellbeing through massage, a walk in the forest or meditation, for example, allowing us to promote the harmony between mind and body that we know influences our health, achieving balance. Without forgetting the latest technologies in medical research. But the most revolutionary leap forward could very well be derived from nature’s incredible feats. Scientists are studying the turritopsis nutricula jellyfish. This tiny creature has a fascinating power: it is, to this day, the only known immortal species, with an endless cycle of regeneration! Perhaps mankind could one day unlock the secrets to its immortality...

The four-pillar philosophy of Clinique La Prairie

The four-pillar philosophy of Clinique La Prairie

By Simone Gibertoni, , CEO of Clinique La Prairie.

Every Clinique La Prairie program since 2016 has been based on a holistic approach that incorporates four key ‘pillars’ for longevity: medical care, nutrition, movement and wellbeing. For nearly 90 years, Clinique la Prairie has studied the mechanisms of ageing, developing programs and technologies that, as our mission statement says, "help people live a better, healthier and longer life."

longevity

This philosophy goes back to 1931, the year the clinic was founded. However, in 2016, it evolved when Clinique La Prairie’s management and a team of renowned scientists who, together, have formed the clinic’s scientific committee for over a decade, added a crucial new element: integrating therapies and technologies developed during our 90-year history into a more holistic approach.

We called this approach the Four Pillars Philosophy. These four pillars are medical care, nutrition, movement and wellbeing. It’s a combination that allows us to continually provide and share the best medical and nutritional technologies, the best movement strategies, our expertise in alternative therapies, and the very latest discoveries in the field of stress reduction and mental serenity.

The essence of our philosophy and the science behind it

clp

For the last four years, we’ve integrated some of the most sophisticated genetic tests on Earth into our longevity and detox programs, alongside our partner Gene Predictis. A precise analysis of a client’s genetic profile means that we can develop a highly personalized plan for each individual, customized according to the objectives of the treatment and the needs of the client.

While genetics are essential, we also know the importance of epigenetics: how much gene expression (the process by which the instructions in our DNA are converted into a functional product, such as a protein) is influenced by our external environment and lifestyle.

Diet, physical activity and stress, for example, all have a huge influence on gene expression. Even twins with the same genes can develop very different pathologies depending on their lifestyle and the environment in which they grow up. This made it necessary for us to put in place a complete and clear structure for all Clinique La Prairie therapies in the medical, nutritional, movement, alternative therapy, stress reduction and sleep fields (to name but a few). Each of these therapies is finely honed into a very specific and proven process.

At our pioneering clinic in Montreux, our experts provide each client with a clear and energizing plan to achieve life-changing results. We want them to maintain a healthy routine and therefore reap the benefits beyond the clinic’s doors. Long-term results are achieved by using our health and wellbeing technologies and by following the ongoing advice we provide. Also, now that Clinique La Prairie is expanding internationally, guests will also be able to continue their health journey with us by attending our longevity centers around the world.

Let me explain those four pillars a little further.

The first is ‘medical insight and care’.

Stem Cells

This is a treasure chest of knowledge containing the know-how of more than 50 doctors who work at Clinique La Prairie and years of research by world-leading scientists.

This knowledge is focused on improving the immune system and reducing inflammation (senoinflammation), recognized today as the main cause of disease-development and ageing. An inflamed cellular environment leads to several issues relating to circadian rhythms, hormone secretion, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA instability, and the inactivation and depletion of stem cells.

Inflammation also leads to the development of harmful senescent cells. Senescent - which literally means being or becoming old - cells are cells which have stopped dividing. They can contaminate normal cells, including immune and stem cells, transforming them into newly senescent cells and triggering a cycle of ageing. By inactivating stem cells, for example, they ultimately promote and progress chronic diseases.

We use only proven science in our continuous search for the best medical methods to battle these effects.

The second pillar is ‘nutrition’

nutrition

As we all know, diet is vital to our health and wellbeing. We are what we eat. This pillar sees us make nutritional changes that can prevent or hinder the age-associated functional decline of cells, decrease cellular oxidative damage, improve microbiota in the gut, support a healthy immune system and improve metabolic flexibility. In short, make body’s function better and age slower.

Our team of nutritionists and doctors constantly improve the food we give and teach to our clients, studying how they influence and improve genetic expression. Indeed, we’ve spent years developing a complete nutritional process, which is based on four steps: CLP Integrative Procedure®; CLP Neutralization process®; CLP Rebalancing Process® and CLP Educational & Coaching Process®.

The third pillar is ‘movement’

sport 6

Inflammation, as mentioned before, is now seen as the main cause of disease-development and ageing. Our own unique ‘movement philosophy’ is a scientifically-proven process developed by our coaches. We create and introduce physical routines that aim to avoid the accumulation of body fat that causes inflammation, as well as to avoid or arrest the age-related muscle loss. On top of this, the routines will achieve better mobility and flexibility, which has multiple wellbeing benefits.

Finally, the fourth pillar is ‘wellbeing’

wellbeing

People have long said “healthy body, healthy mind” but this adage can be flipped. Our mental wellbeing is intrinsically linked to our physical health.

The fundamental goal of this pillar is to reduce stress through techniques such as transcendental meditation, which has proven cardiovascular and ageing benefits and is effective in protecting telomeres: the caps at the end of each DNA strand that protect our chromosomes. Shortened telomeres have been linked with disease.

Many sophisticated therapies are available. New experiences are developed continually within our medical spa. Combined with the best technologies available today, they provide guests with highly effective and enjoyable wellbeing programs

To summarise, our four-pillar philosophy uniquely combines the best scientifically-proven technologies and techniques, many of which are exclusive to Clinique La Prairie, to provide lasting benefits.

Medically speaking, this synergistic approach activates a balanced gene expression which then provides instructions to produce proteins associated with longevity, rather than those related to senescence. It slows the ageing process and possibly much more.

Ultimately, this expert approach allows guests to stay healthy, live longer and live life to its fullest, thanks to programs that fulfill every physical, psychological and emotional need. It’s an exclusive experience that helps you step into a different future.

Heat, cold and sounds for your wellbeing

Contrast of heat and cold for your wellbeing

Heat and cold energies, as therapeutic tools, are used in our programs in various combinations, from total immersion to experiences that leverage dilation and contraction provided by the contrast in temperatures. The many health benefits of these therapies include stimulating blood circulation and respiratory tracts, deeply relaxing the body to combat stress more effectively, calming muscle pains, maintaining body’s homeostasis.

Contrast Hydrotherapy Circuit Experience

kneip

This circuit is designed to favor homeostasis in the body to achieve excellent health and wellness. Each element in the circuit has a well-defined role, whether that be awakening, energizing or nourishing one or several bodies at the same time, with the ultimate goal of harmonizing and energizing the body as a whole.

Included in Master Detox program, or can be added for any program. Time: 90 minutes

Full body Cryotherapy session

cryo clp

Cryotherapy uses extremely cold temperatures to boost health and reduce injury recovery time. These benefits start by reducing inflammation, relieving pain and improving mobility. The process reduces cellular metabolism, inflammation, pain and spasms while increasing cell survival and favoring vasoconstriction and vasodilation, which increases oxygen levels in the blood that is delivered to damaged tissue. Cryotherapy also has a positive effect on our emotions, particularly stress, by releasing endorphins though the hypothalamus.

Included in Weight Loss System and Mater Detox programs, or can be added for any program upon doctor's approval. Time: 10 minutes

Infratherapy session

Vital dome

This state-of-the-art technology uses long infrared rays (the only sunrays beneficial to living beings) to detoxify the body, as well as aiding relaxation, muscle recovery, slimming and health. It helps boost the immune system, soothe the nervous system, relieve joint pain and balance blood pressure.

Included in Revitalisaton and Master Detox programs, or can be added for any program. Time: 45 minutes

Spa Wave experience

waves

This acoustic and vibration therapy is guided by technology that trains the brain to let go and succumb to deep relaxation techniques, enabling even the busiest of minds to enter a deep level of relaxation. As in meditation, specific sounds slow down mental activity, while vibration frequencies target the body’s energy centers.

How to use nutrients to boost your body energy?

energy and nutrition

The complex interaction between several compounds of our daily diet and the functioning of our body is a fascinating universe. By simply selecting specific micronutrients in our food, we can beneficially modulate core physiological processes such as energy metabolism and cerebral blood-flow reducing fatigue incidence and improving physical/mental recovery. Discover our dietician’s tips to adopt healthy habits.

Increase your B vitamins

seeds

It has been noted that deficiencies in both B vitamins and CoQ10 are associated with fatigue and a number of conditions related to compromised mitochondrial function (an essential part of the cell that is involved in energy production).  Of particular relevance here vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5 are essential co-factors in mitochondrial activity and cellular energy production. These vitamins can be found mostly in whole grains, legumes, seeds, dried fruits, green leafy vegetables, pulses, and avocado.

Natural antioxidant

Oil Nuts

Coenzyme Q10 is an effective natural antioxidant synthetized by our body at a low rate with a fundamental role in cellular bioenergetics and numerous known health benefits. Coenzyme Q10 is an essential element required for the production of energy. Nuts, and some oils are the richest nutritional sources of CoQ 10, while much lower levels can be found in most dairy products, vegetables, fruits, and cereals.

Powerful "chronobiotic"

Pistachios energy

Melatonin, the primary hormone of sleep, is a powerful "chronobiotic" that helps maintain the body's normal circadian rhythms (an internal process that regulates the sleep-wake cycle). Studies indicate melatonin provides its sleep-promoting efficacy by promoting the ability to stay asleep, and by enhancing the depth of sleep, in other words melatonin is crucial to ensuring sleep quality, brain recovery, brain performance next day and less fatigue. Top rich foods in natural melatonin are walnuts and pistachios which might be an excellent snack in the evening to promote good sleep and recovery.

Cellular protection

Complements

From improved vision to skin health, mental sharpness and better muscle performance, natural astaxanthin is one of the most valuable ingredients. Derived from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid. Unlike other antioxidants, its unique structure enables it to target free radicals in the inner and outer layer of the cell membrane, thus protecting cells from oxidative stress. In doing so, astaxanthin can boost muscle endurance, counteract fatigue, reduce inflammation and enhance capillary blood flow in the brain. As a fat-soluble compound with an affinity for fatty tissues like the brain, astaxanthin is an antioxidant of choice for cognitive health and neuroprotection.

90 years pioneering the science of longevity and immunity

clp_immunity

The immune system has been on everyone’s mind in the past few months. It is much more than a single system that can be measured, it’s an intricate network of tissues, organs, cells, and molecular activities. Helping your immune system or boosting it mean to approach the many different components that interact with each other to accomplish their essential function to keep you strong and healthy.

Exploring how our body can empower us to live a longer, healthier and better life is at the core of Clinique La Prairie since 1931.

Dr Niehans established Clinique La Prairie for his patients to experience his revolutionary cellular ‘Revitalisation’ program, whose principles continue to be at the heart of the clinic’s work, standing the test of time.

For almost 90 years, we have been dedicated to preventative medicine combined with a holistic healthy living.

Take a look at the science behind immunity with us.

How to boost your immune system - Dr. Adrian Heini

A key mission to our health

Thanks to our immune system, we cannot fall ill from a disease that we have already had, or against which we have been vaccinated. it can be empowered by its adaptive mechanisms to reinforce its capacity of response to future threats. This ability is due to the fact that the immune system keeps track of the pathogens or malignant cells it has fought, which allows it to recognize and protect itself from them. Without immune protection, a simple scratch would be potentially fatal.

The threats are never-ending: bacteria, viruses, parasites, cuts, burns, dust, pollen and other allergens, chemical particles, heavy metals, etc. All of these pathogens are identified by our immune system as foreign to the body and therefore need to be eliminated. Part of this system is innate; from our birth, we have immune cells that constantly patrol the blood and immediately react to an alert. The other is said to be acquired, because it develops adaptively by exposure to all kinds of pathogens. It operates on the second line and more specifically. In fact, our immune system is very much structured and its lines intervene in a well-established order to accomplish their respective missions.

clp_immunity

Well-functioning defense system

The skin, mucous membranes, lungs and urinary tract form the first barrier against attack. Sweat and tears, typically, have an elimination function. Likewise, our nasal walls are lined with tiny, vibrating cilia whose wave-like motion constantly pushes out unwanted microparticles. If this is not enough to prevent infection, a second line of defense is put in place. White blood cells, capable of engulfing microbes, move to the site of the assault and quickly send chemical signals to their rearguard to call for reinforcement.

clp_immunity

The inflammatory response

This reaction is part of a process called an inflammatory response; it corresponds to the widening of the blood vessels, which is necessary to facilitate the massive arrival of the fighting cells. It is therefore a transient and completely normal phenomenon, even if it is accompanied by signals which may appear worrying (heat, redness, swelling and pain).

The white blood cells that arrive first are part of the innate immune system and have therefore never before been exposed to pathogens. As a result, they are not very good at distinguishing the enemy and tend to aim wide. Surgical strikes are entrusted to white blood cells belonging to the acquired immune system, B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes. The B lymphocytes produce antibodies, that is to say proteins capable of pinpointing the enemy precisely in order to destroy it. T lymphocytes are responsible for cleaning the place by destroying infected cells without reaching nearby healthy cells.

Once their work is completed, a good number of the lymphocytes die, but those who survive keep a memory of their attacker, a precious faculty that science exploits for the development of vaccines.

Sufficient sleep is vital to be more resistant

This relentless fight against infectious agents is sometimes unbalanced, especially in periods of insomnia, fatigue or stress. It is well known that a good rest is essential for the proper functioning of the body. The different phases of sleep help the body to recharge its batteries, process and then store the information recorded throughout the day and somehow restore our memory. In addition, while we sleep, our body produces hormones that have a supporting effect on the immune system.

When our nights do not allow us to recover properly, our body is weakened, which predisposes it to infections. Moreover, there is sometimes a negative impact on weight, since sleep deficit tends to stimulate the secretion of the appetite-inducing hormone (called ghrelin), while inhibiting the satiety hormone (leptin). Chronic insomnia, persistent fatigue, scarring problems and/or recurrent infections (colds, cystitis, etc.) are signs likely to be linked to a weakening of the immune defenses and should therefore not be taken lightly.  Preserving your immune system is of even greater importance as you grow older, as aging is naturally accompanied by a decrease in the performance of the body's defense mechanisms against pathogens.

clp_immunity

Proteins aid in producing cells and enzymes which fight aggressions

What you eat affects how long you live and the way you feel every day. When discussing the immune system, we mustn’t forget to include protein-rich meals, as they are essential to strong immunity.  Proteins not only counteract lean muscle loss but also contain high amounts of zinc, which aids in production of white blood cells and enzymes which fight against aggressive microbes and infections. The best protein sources are vegan (nuts, seeds and pulses) and they are also excellent for minerals and vitamins.

clp_immunity

Food, vitamins and probiotics are your best allies

Nutrition is your primary protector. A diet rich in seasonal fruits and vegetables helps strengthen our immune system, while reducing the oxidative stress generated by the elimination of pathogens.  Apart from Vitamin C which is of course key for the immune system, Vitamin E and Beta-carotene are also essential as antioxidant. Low levels of Vitamin D have been associated with worsening autoimmune diseases. If you are not able to get enough sunlight, you should ask for advice regarding D3 dosage.  But also, the probiotics naturally present in fermented milks (e.g. yogurts, white cheeses) and available in the form of food supplements are precious allies. Their consumption helps fight the proliferation of unwanted germs in the intestine.  Saving your digestive system therefore boosts your immune system. In fact, an increasing number of studies have established a link between a diverse microbiota and an optimal functioning of our immune defenses.

CLP_IMMUNITY

Keeping physically active and emotionally balanced is a vital factor

Many epidemiological studies show that it is possible to promote the proper functioning of our immune system by taking care of our body, by eating a healthy and balanced diet, by practicing an adapted physical activity, by limiting stressful situations, and more. When your body is stressed, it lowers your immunity and can make you feel tired, sick, sleepless and anxious. Meditation, yoga, Qi gong and self-reflection are a great way to keep your stress under control. Also, regular and sustained exercise has a multitude of benefits including decreasing inflammation and improving immune regulation (physicians recommend to avoid high intensity exercises if you have low immunity though).

CLP IMMUNITY

You should cherish your immunity all year long

It is obviously desirable to have good immunity at all times. But everyone goes through delicate periods of heavy physical, nervous or intellectual solicitation. This increased immune stress often coincides with the start of a new season (influenza in winter, spring allergies, summer skin rash, ...), but it can happen at any time of the year, depending on life events and of course on unique health situation like the Covid-19. It is important to have a year-long mindful approach to sustain your body with preventative efforts to alert the immune system for the time of contact with pathogens.

A holistic approach under medical supervision

Although it is possible to preserve your immune system through a healthy lifestyle, trying to intensify it without medical supervision is not recommended. The immune system features many different components : helping one component might impair another, or boosting a certain one may have nothing to do with your needs.

The techniques and therapies are the result of numerous years of scientific research in our experts’ fields of specialization.

At Clinique La Prairie, we believe in a preventive approach that integrates the following four aspects: medical, nutritional, physical activity and well-being. Our programs are therefore based on a conception of preventive medicine in the broadest sense of the term and which takes into account the most recent information in the field of immunity. We offer you a comprehensive medical check-up with, among other things, a detailed history, laboratory analyses, medical imaging examinations and predictive genetic tests. This holistic approach allows us to provide you with personalized recommendations to help you live long and healthy lives.
